of Dr. Narendra Arya for Sanskrit workshop.
3. Regarding teaching of Sanskrit in our schools, it was re-emphasized that
each student of any Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre must learn
Sanskrit as best as possible and for that Sanskrit should be made

it from this session. However the Trust Co-ordinators were
advised to prepare a list of schools under their jurisdiction with status of
Sanskrit in their schools.
4. Anjali Tripathy proposed to start spoken English in our schools from Std-

AVI-USA in United Nations Green Cities Expo with Green Century Institute
AVI-USA, in collaboration with the Green Century Institute, was honored to be a presence in the United Nation’sGreen Cities Expo.Green Century Institute (GCI), a project of theRudolph Steiner Foundation, intends to build Califia, anecological project envisioned for Northern California.Executive Director Michael Gosney visited Auroville inJanuary because Auroville is the largest and longestrunning ecological city of its kind, and decided tocollaborate with AVI-USA to give greater exposure to bothAuroville and the potential of Califia. At the main gallery, Auroville had a display at the artexhibition, which consisted of large posters and the videos“Towards a Sustainable Future” and ”The Dream of theDivine” running on televisions in a continuous loop.Thousands of people got perhaps their first exposure toAuroville with this display. On the occasion of the United Nations WorldEnvironment Day, June 3rd, the California Institute ofIntegral Studies hosted a symposium on Auroville andCalifia.
About one hundred and fifty people were inattendance for the panel moderated by Michael Gosneyand Bindu Mohanty, a current Aurovilian who has beenstudying at CIIS. Other members of the panel were KathyWalking, of the Adventure community in Auroville, whocoordinates with several universities in the US foreducational opportunities in Auroville, Reinhold Zeigler, arenewable energy pioneer and green design consultantwith Synergy International and GCI, and Charles Flores ofAVI-USA. The featured speaker was Lalit Kishore Bhati, one of the main town planners of Auroville, who gave afascinating PowerPoint presentation on Auroville. While the intention was to speak in equal parts aboutAuroville and Califia, the audience displayed a stronginterest in Auroville and its progress. After the symposium, many came and purchased videos and received literatureon Auroville and AVI-USA. Grace Aroha of Auroville andnow Lodi Sri Aurobindo Sadhana Peetham came to helpwith the sales, the profits of which went to Auroville.Overall, the collaboration with GCI was a greatsuccess, and AVI-USA hopes to do more fruitfulcollaborations with GCI and other like-mindedorganizations in the future.

Julianpresented some photographs of the devastation and theTsunami Relief effort, and a new film which documentedthe relief efforts the day of the tsunami.
Julian alsoprovided the latest news on the construction of the Matrimandir, which with enough contributions from theAVI centers, could be completely finished by 2008,exactly 40 years from the founding of Auroville. Charlespresented on the CIIS-Auroville collaboration, resultingin two two-week courses in Auroville, and one friendsand alumni trip. This winter in Auroville was very busy,as not only did the Auroville International conferencetake place there this year, but also a three-day IntegralPsychology Conference and a United NationsInternational Youth Conference.Sri Aurobindo Sadhana Peetham member Vishnuspoke about the future additions to the physical structureof the Lodi Ashram which would allow for larger groupsof people to come and stay overnight on the property. This exciting development will allow for longer and moreinteresting stays for future Auro-Reunions.The next Auro-Reunion is set to be held in the Lodiashram in CA on November 5th and will feature Narad,an American working in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram andAuroville, with an update on the Matrimandir Gardens.Mark the date!

The most recent honor was his recent appointmentas Chair of the prestigious Indian Council for CulturalRelations (ICCR). This is in addition to his currentservice as a Deputy Leader of the Congress Party in theRajya Sabha and Chancellor of Nehru University. Most importantly in our view, Dr. Karan Singh isserving a second stint as Chairman of the Governing Board of Auroville. He was catapulted into political life at the early ageof eighteen when, in 1949, he was appointed Regent ofKashmir by his father on the intervention of PrimeMinister Jawaharlal Nehru.
He is a renowned orator, andhas lectured in five continents on philosophy and culture, politics and the environment.Dr. Singh's talk will focus on sectarian violence andthe need for multiculturalism and Human Unity. The First Letter of Prapatti on Dalijoda
Sri Aurobindo's action Pondicherry - 2
03.05.1974
Srima
My dear Shyama,
Your letter. I shall discuss with Dr. Jyotsna Devi regd. Dalijoda affairs when I go to Cuttack. I have gone through your letter. This much I would make clear to you and others that we are least eager for property at this stage. We have no such intension unless it helps us in our New Mission. The first thing is to know what Jyotsna Devi herself wants, her terms and conditions. Let this be in writing. We will try to fulfill those conditions, if it suits us or else we keep away from the same work. So, let her make clear to us what she wants and what are the terms under which we have to work at Dalijoda. This must be setteled first. I don't find any confusion in this.I am sure the Mother's Will will finally prevail, let us be sincere and pure in our heart.
Rest OK. Yours affectionately PRAPATTI To Mrs. Shyama Kanungo
ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT OF SRI AUROBINDO SRIKSHETRA TRUST FOR THE YEAR 2003 - 2004
Sri Aurobindo Srikshetra in the last thirty years has emerged as a centre of social transformation and self-purification. The consciousness of highest perfection has descended on earth by life-long sadhana of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother as the golden waters of the supramental heaven. Spiritual seekers aspiring to have a deep into this honey-fire for their new birth has been drawn here by an unseen impulse and gathered for a new adventure. The following activities have taken form by itself at the need of the hour.
1. AGRICULTURE - The cultivation of annual crops were paddy in 35 acres, sugarcane in 7 acres, vegetable in 3 acres. The damaged cashew orchard was cleared and fresh plantation was made in 14 acres. Experiments are being conducted to introduce vermicompost and vermiwash widely in the firm for wholesale organic farming.
2. DIARY - Forage cultivation all round the year with an assured irrigation was ultimately provided by the excavation and development of Champak lake. There is now a prospect to improve the diary with a commercial angle for self-sustainance whenever OMFED milk route would be introduced to this area. It will be also a necessity to provide milk for the hostellers in future.
3. ECO AND ENVIORNMENT - The forest was further adorned with new species like. Accacia Mangium and other rare plants. The mini zoo "Paradise" was being maintained as before. The flower garden and avenue plantations are looked after. There is an effort to collect all the 898 flowers with a Spiritual significance as given by the Mother from time to time. So far collection has reached more than 350 varieties.
4. HANDICRAFTS AND COTTAGE INDUSTRIES - Experiments are conducted to manufacture agarbathi from natural essential oil and to improve the existing ones by the addition of aromatic resins.
5. EDUCATION AND AWARENESS - There are requests to start a student hostel as the infrastructure has improved. We are seriously working on this proposal.
6. HEALTH AND SANITATION - The Health centre needs a regular doctor to fulfill all the needs of the local patients even for primary health care. A sadhak pharmacist has joined with enthusiasm. The homeopathic treatment has gained ground. People are made conscious to use natural herbs for treatment. Common medicinal herbs are grown in our nursery and are made ready for sale at a low cost.
7. INTEGRAL YOGA AND CULTURE - A sovenir was published to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Sri Aurobindo's Relics Installation at this place. All the annual functions were celebrated duly. Meditation and spiritual discourses are held each day at the prescribed hours. The sadhaks Sri Anadi Charan Swain and Sri Pravat nayak held camps and addressed spiritual gatherings in all the thirty districts of the state throughout the year to spread the culture of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo for the good of humanity at large.

at Kotpad, Koraput, Damanjodi, Raighar, Indravati, Turudihi, Hatabharandi, Umarkote, Jayapur in May,
Taharpur, Charampa, Kolha, Podamari, Mahantipada, Chandragiri, Nuapatna, Berhampur and Gopinathpur in June.
They addressed the district level workers and organisers at the respective district headquarters on different days of July.

Sri Aurobindo Shrikshetra, Dalijoda

MY FRAGRANCE SEIZE THEE IN THE JASMINE'S SNARE - Dr. Shyama Kanungo
Sometime in 1966-67 the son of Kshetramohan Ray, Brigadier Sangram Keshari Ray after his retirement took a Bank loan for the purpose of developing the family farm land. My mother Pratibha used to be there supervising the work with some distant relations to her aid. Her brother now joined her and would go there off and on.It was during this time after having sat for our school finals that my sister Reba and I went to spend a few days with our mother at Dalijoda. It was somewhere around 1968 February. It was at this time that we had written to the Mother a prayer to start student's Study Circle at Cuttack and suggested to our mother to organize a Study circle at Dalijoda also. While at Dalijoda I had walked up to the small hillock (now named Matru Shikhar by Madhu Bhaina) for the purpose of sketching. Sitting under the shade of a small shed meant for watching the paddy fields I was attempting to draw something. The calm beauteous and fragrant atmosphere suddenly came alive and perhaps the aspiration of the place came alive. A thought entered from somewhere and welled up from deep within - how wonderful it would be if this place belonged to the Mother! Perhaps wishing to develop in Her ideology. I don't know but the fragrance of that sublime moment I can never forget. The Sri Aurobindo Student's Association at Ranihat started on 12th July 1969. Reba and I joined S.C.B. Medical College in 1970. I went to Ashram in 1971 May with my friend Dr. Salila, sister Abha & brother Jaivir to attend a Youth Camp organized by Prapatti. The occasion to see the Mother for the first time was given to us on 25th May 1971. Day by day the urge to open our lives to the Mother grew. We, the children of Pratibha & Ajit joyfully organized the Study Circle. We started a small flower garden and in our childish way named it THE MOTHER'S GARDEN- We also started a vegetable garden - on behalf of the Study Circle in the campus of 'Shreekshetra' Ranihat - 'Shree' from Shreemati and 'Kshetra' from Kshetramohan. Incidentally this piece of land was purchased from Orissa's famous barrister Madhusudan Das who was afriend of my maternal grandfather, Capt. Dr. Kshetramohan Ray. My sister Rita joined Sri Aurobindo Ashram after having written to The Mother. She is ever since the family's bridge to The Mother. The farm at Dalijoda was named 'Shreekshetra farm'. After our uncle's (Brig.Sangram Keshary Ray) death in the tractor accident the bank loan was attached to Jyotsna Dei's account. The loss of her dear brother and reluctance and inability of other family members to take up the burden and the mounting compound interest took the smile out of Jyotsna Dei's face. She had many sleepless nights not knowing how to shoulder the load of such heavy responsibility. It was at this point the possibility arose of being associated with Babaji Maharaj and Prapatti via many letters and a transfer of land assets and liabilities to a trust for giving a practical shape to Sri Aurobindo's ideology with the effort to develop the whole 200 acres of land and pay up the loan . The final dialogue between Prapatti and Jyotsna Dei was on 27th May 1974. This day by coincidence was death anniversary of Kshetramohan Ray.Babaji Maharaj had felt a strange 'warmth' when the proposal had reached through Prapatti. This very word Prapatti had uttered in describing Babaji's experience. On 30th of June 1974 I remember being there at Dalijoda in the mud house at present the site of the old 'Dining Hall'. The Meditation was charged with the Mother's Presence.Soon the loans were paid off by devotees donating freely from all quarters. In the joy of this offering my aunt Indira, my mother Pratibha and uncle Ajit donated their share of land to the Trust. Dr. Jyotsna Dei and Bina Dei followed suit later. The Lord's physical advent to Dalijoda was on 4th of April, His day of arrival at the shores of Pondicherry ; this day happens also to be the birthday of this great lady Jyotsna Dei. A mere coincidence or Sweet Mother's loving sanction and grace?Champaklal had once told me that he had seen her crying. Giving a beautiful Blessings packet prepared by him of Mother's touched petals he had asked me to tell Jyotsna Dei 'not to worry'.When Jyotsna Dei left her body she had been repeating the Lord's and Mother's name. - The day she left was on 'Bahuda' during the Monday Study Circle hour and 18th July - Matrubahban's foundation day - all a coincidence again or sheer 'Grace'?Shree Kshetra farm is now transformed into the grand Sri Aurobindo Shrikshetra. For a gracious acceptance of the Lord of His own property there have to be some outward mechanics and flood of events that have gone by. For a grateful land however it was a prayer answered and sieze by the 'Jasmine's snare'.
